received his Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University in 1984, having studied with Boston Symphony Orchestra principal trombonist Ron Barron. While at BU, he also studied with the internationally acclaimed Empire Brass Quintet and attended the Tanglewood Institute. After graduation he freelanced in the Boston area performing with the Back Bay Brass Quintet and as a trombonist for The Opera Company of Boston under the direction of Sarah Caldwell. He began his full time orchestral career in 1988 after winning the national audition for principal trombonist of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He also performed as the principal trombonist of the Tulsa Philharmonic and the Florida Symphony Orchestra before coming to Charlotte in 1993. In addition to serving as principal trombone for the Charlotte Symphony, John performs with the summer festival orchestra for the Peter Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon.
